Back for its 17th season, the popular winter concert series has not only brought amazing jazz and blues acts to PEI but has also given away thousands of dollars in Scholarships to Island students heading off to study jazz. Past performers include Jenn Grant, Kim Dunn, Campbell & Johnston, Don Ross, Erin Costelo, Paul Tynan, Coco Love Alcorn, Ian Sherwood, and Island performers Mike Ross, Joey Kitson, Logan Richard, and Tara MacLean to name a few. The series offers a supper jazz opportunity, with an early show from 7:00-9:30 PM and a great venue. The Pourhouse offers the perfect fit for the series, as they offer a great atmosphere, great food, and a fantastic reputation for live music, with packed shows all last season.
Summerside, PEI’s Nathan Wiley first earned acclaim for his 2002 debut Bottom Dollar, which won the East Coast Music Award for Alternative Album of the Year, and was chosen by Billboard Magazine as one of the top ten albums of 2002. His blend of classic sounds with a modern, slightly world weary perspective struck a chord with listeners, as songs full of subtle melodies and lyrics addressing those unquenchable yearnings inside all of us wormed their way into their ears. In the years that followed, Wiley has made good on the promise of Bottom Dollar with the ECMA-winning sophomore album High Low (2004), the Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) produced effort, The City Destroyed Me (2007), Bandits (2015) and most recently Modern Magic, which took home Music PEI’s “album of the year” and “songwriter of the year” as well as another ECMA nomination. Nathan recently scored the feature film, Nightblooms and has shared the stage with artists like Blue Rodeo, Sarah Harmer, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Matt Mays, Ron Sexsmith and many more, while his work has appeared on tv, film and stage.
Anchoring the Winterjazz concert series for season 17 is the house band of Deryl Gallant, Glen Strickey, Ian Toms, and Max Gallant. This group has been busy hosting the Winterjazz series and performing regularly on the Island. Some highlights for the group include winning both Best Jazz Recording and Achievement in Classical or Jazz at the Music PEI Awards. They have hosted the Jazz and Blues stage at the ECMA’s, and have been nominated for two ECMA’s. The members of this group have been featured on countless recordings, have won dozens of awards in the music industry, and have performed all over the world with various artists.
The Show will take place at The Pourhouse, 189 Great George St., Charlottetown on Saturday, February 8th from 7:00-9:30PM. Admission for the show is just $30 (cash-only at the door) with a portion of the profits going to a scholarship for Island students entering a jazz program. Reservations are strongly recommended, as tables fill early. For reservations please call (902) 892-5200.
